Before the dissertation reaches its final form, it will be submitted to a preliminary defence in accordance with the quality assurance plan of the competent doctoral school. Students may only apply for a preliminary defence after they have successfully taken their complex examination. After the completion of the education, the requirement for application for a preliminary defence is the fulfillment of the conditions related to earning credits (obtaining the absolutorium). The preliminary defence is organised by the council of the doctoral school. A written record of the preliminary defence is also drawn up. Upon application for the preliminary defence, the following documents must be submitted or presented (as specified by the doctoral school):
- the dissertation containing the official list of publications issued by the Kenézy Life Sciences Library, and the theses in a printed and/or electronic form
- the co-author disclaimers, and/or the declaration(s) documenting shared use (The original documents must be submitted upon application for the public defence.)
- declaration of the candidate (The original documents must be submitted upon application for the public defence.)
- proof of issuance of the absolutorium (issued by the PhD office)
- proof for candidate meeting the language requirements (issued by the PhD office)
Before evaluation, the secretary of the doctoral school will send the dissertation submitted for preliminary defence to the University and National Library for screening for duplicate text. A written record must be kept of the preliminary defence, and a copy of the record must be sent to the doctoral committee of the disciplinary area along with the attached enclosures. In the written report a separate declaration will be made as to whether on the basis of the result of the screening for duplicate text the dissertation submitted for preliminary defence meets the requirements of publication ethics. The details and requirements of the preliminary defence procedure will be specified by the competent doctoral school. After the preliminary defence, the candidate must make alterations and modifications in the dissertation and the thesis booklet on the basis of the recommendations made by the board and recorded in the written report. The dissertation supervisor needs to declare in writing that the alterations have been made, and the declaration must be sent to the doctoral committee of the disciplinary area together with the rest of required documents. The candidate must apply for the public defence in writing, and the Doctoral Committee of Medical Sciences will decide whether the candidate can be admitted to the public defence. The application for the public defence must be submitted to the secretary of the Doctoral Committee of Medical Sciences, or the PhD office.
